But also newspapers, books, conferences and other things can be very helpful!
As far as informal learning is concerned I think that foreign friends, activities in pubs, music, newspapers, travels and of course the Internet, are just a small part of the useful 'tools'.

If I do not consider the University way of learning (as I am suppose to finish my University career in a quite short time (at least I hope so!!) ) I'm sure I'm still having a lot of nice sources to use in order to improve more and more my English language!

fedybhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04990593724456650146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9039247546460214255.post-7959369779575819492009-05-18T21:56:00.002+02:002009-05-18T22:02:19.124+02:00uh.....Hello everybody!!
Last week we tried to understand some 'internet words' such as phishing, trojan horse, hacker etc. I think it is very important to know our enemies in the use of the web!!
This week I am suppose to develop a map concerning my improving during this year. I am trying to draw it in a paper and then put it in my blog (as our teacher suggested us!)...it is taking more time than expected.... I think I will postpone this task, also because I'm having two exams this week....keep your fingers crossed for me!!!!!

see you :))fedybhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04990593724456650146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9039247546460214255.post-32576311904284481072009-05-12T20:35:00.003+02:002009-05-12T20:52:55.088+02:00INTERNET RISKS
Last week we reflected on the possible risks we may find using the internet. The most important risks we found concerne the possibility for other people to have access to our personal information. There are also persons who called themselves 'hackers' and can create viruses or spyware and have access to our personal computers. They can see all the information we have on our computer and send us advertisements; they can also damage our operating system.

I think that the most dangerous things a person can do is to use the internet in a non resposible way, which means to share personal information with others (in particular with persons that he/she does not know) and have access to web sites generally considered 'not safe'.
We should always keep in mind that everybody can see the information we put on the internet and for this reason we should avoid the publishing of personal information (address and phone number) or personal data (credic card number). A nice thing to do could also be to change periodically our passwords.

With regards to web sites like Facebook we should always remeber to share our information just with our friends and with people that we know in our daily life. In particular we should avoid the publishing of photos too much private or that include other persons (we may ask the permission to those people first!).

I don't think we should simply stop using the internet, because it is a very nice tool and a very useful one...we should just try to do everything using our brain!

A big problem could come out with regards to the use of the internet for young people. Teenagers usually use the internet just trying to have a different life; if they are not popular in the 'real life' they may try to create a different character for themselves and search for friends in the web. In this way they can talk with nicknames and do not know the real person to whom they are talking....in this case I think that parents are still the only ones who can do something as far as the young boy/girl understands the possible risks...

As far as viruses and spyware are concerned I think that the only one thing we can do is to download free antivuruses and free antispyware and check our computer safety many times a week!!!

fedybhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04990593724456650146noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9039247546460214255.post-49852313905494362632009-05-04T20:19:00.002+02:002009-05-04T20:37:37.158+02:00EDITING REFERENCES
Last week we were supposed to edit some references that our teacher gave us.
We created an account on google.docs and we created a document which has to be shared with the peers of each group.
Google.docs is very useful!
Being able to share documents and comments with other people is very helpful because we can work all together at the same time and we can see each other's work without necessity of sending texts by email.

We should use both APA and MLA styles in order to find mistakes in the references provided and try to correct them. Here is my part of job:

Lanham, R.A. (1995) Digital literacy. I basically corrected the references editing the text in the italics format when the title of the article is long.
Names of the authors should be written with the capital letter, in alphabetic order, and if there are more than one name we should separate them with a &.
It is important to put the complete name of the title and the reference to the pages and volumes of the article or book which we are referring to.
There are also fixed rules for the punctuation which are different in APA and MLA style.
In my group we tried to use more APA style becuase it seemed the clearest one. APA style provides also rules regarding different ways of writing references for articles or books.

Well, I can say that being able to write references in the right way is a very difficult purpose...but I think that with a little more study and strenght of spirit I will learn the most important things about this topic and I will write references in my final thesis in the right way!!!

fedybhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04990593724456650146noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9039247546460214255.post-72502661678096176252009-05-04T19:54:00.003+02:002009-05-04T20:12:37.346+02:00LET'S ANALYSE!!
Unfortunately I wasn't in class last Thursday...but I made the E-tivity6 and I analysed the article I chose.
I based my job on APA and MLA styles and I learnt (oh, well, I think I learnt :) many useful things.
Here I paste the job I did.

<!-- #toc, .toc, .mw-warning { border: 1px solid #aaa; I often use tools such as Wikipedia and the dictionary on wordreference.com which give a big support to an Italian speaker who is writing in English.
But when I read an article on the web I try to understand the whole meaning at a first reading and then elaborate on the content. In order to get more information about the author, the context etc, it is very useful to use some online tools; the ones I prefer are: a monolongual dictionary and a bilingual dictionary, wikipedia, google and delicious which help me to understand everything I read and maybe analyze the social or historical contexts within the article.

For the last e-tivity I fiund an interesting article about the Argentina crisis. The purpose of the e-tivity was to analyze that article,
- Who was the researcher?
The researcher of my article is not a single person I guess, but the text has been made by the "Bretton Woods Project" which was "created as an independent initiative by a group of British non-governmental organisations (NGOs), it works with an extensive network to press for increased transparency and civil society participation in World Bank and IMF policies and interventions". http://brettonwoodsproject.org/project/about.shtml

- About the research
The article is a report realized with the aim of focusing on some problems appeared during the Argentina crisis. The researcher does not provide personal comments but makes an analitical description of the facts.

The article was written on september 2004 and data includes refer to the years from 1991 to 2004. The researcher collected all the information with regards to the mistakes of the International Monetary Fund.
The research was made using many fonts, but there are not specific reference to the exact fonts used to write the article. The conclusion refers to a long term period because the article ends with suppositions about the future and the next steps of the IMF and the International Organizations.

I did not answer to all the questions given in the handout 1 because that task was very difficult for me. I didn't find the information required inside the article I found. For example I was not able to answer to "what were the findings" and "what reservations or limitations on the research did the writer mention".

Some more data about the analysis of the article refer to the reason why I decided to use that particular article.
When we read articles or texts whether in the web and in newspapers we should always read the whole text and analyse the way in which the information are given. I decided to use the article I found because it is written in a very good way and refers to the topic I wish to talk about in my final thesis. The article was very interesting because it underlines a different aspect of the Argentina crisis, that is mistakes and problems of the IMF. The credentials of the author are perfectly acceptable because the article was written by a project competent about that specific topic.

In the last posts I tried to make a complete analysis of an on-line text providing also examples. I hope this would be useful also for my future work on my final thesis.

My next step will be analyzing the content of the article, considering the words used and the different ways of expressing things in order to persuade the reader.

fedybhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04990593724456650146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9039247546460214255.post-65353832328181037802009-04-22T18:56:00.007+02:002009-04-22T19:25:37.306+02:00MLA and APA formats....what a topic!!
I look at the sites in which APA format and MLA format are presented and I am pretty shocked! The APA format gives information strickly relating to the format generally used in the writing of on an essay.
I tend to use the APA format because it is the easiest one and I must admit that I never considered the MLA format and this is the reason why I quoted the whole explanation. I don't feel like I can provide examples by myself about his specific topic.
I appreciated the huge amount of examples given in these sites but I think this would be the most diffucult post I am supposed to do! I always use the simplest way of making quotation which is putting the sentence between double inverted commas. I always remember to write proper names with the capital letter and after the quotation I put the name of the author and the reference to where I got that quotation.

I hope that these examples will help me in the developing of my thesis...in the next future!

fedybhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04990593724456650146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9039247546460214255.post-37831529958660107002009-04-22T17:42:00.004+02:002009-04-22T18:41:30.612+02:00EVALUATING MY POST AND AN ARTICLE

We all agree that every text we made should be well structured, cohesive and coherent. The best way to write a text is to divide it up into three main parts: the introduction, in which we present the topic we will develop, the main body, in which we develop the topic providing examples, personal ideas and references and the conclusion, in which we give additional information about the topic and reinforce our point of view.
In an academic paper it is necessary to develop the topic following the previous division. The language should be clear (even though Italians think that it would be better to use a qualified and refined language that, however, can also appear obscure to the reader) and the topic should be developed in a coherent and cohesive way, in order to avoid misunderstandings and repetitions.
I analysed my blog posts and I tried to understand whether I followed the previous instructions or not. In general I can say that I use to write every kind of text beginning with the presentation of the topic which will be better developed with information that I find on the web or in my personal notes and then I give my personal opinion in relation to the topic and provide a nice conclusion in which I try to give additional information and reinforce my personal ideas. I noticed that I always try to end my texts with a 'nice sentence' which could conclude my text in the best way and also give the reader the possibility to express his personal ideas and reflect on what I wrote.
Since blog post should not be too long so that they do not seem boring, introduction and conclusion are often very short. My blog posts are addressed to young people like me while academic papers are addressed to people involved in the topic, often to professors. For this reason academic papers are structured in a way in which they can take for granted the fact that readers know perfectly well the topic. My personal blog post are written focusing on the fact that readers may not be members of my University and the language is mostly informal. Owners are granted some exclusive rights to a variety of intangible assets such as musical, literary and artistic works. Even ideas, discoveries, inventions and tecnologies are covered by intellectual Property Rights.
The majority of intellectual property rights provide creators of original works economic incentive. Modern usage of the term intellectual property began with the 1967 estabilishment of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) but the concept itself made its appearance after the French revolution around 1818. Although the term is in wide use there are some critics who reject it.
I completely agree with the existence of property rights because if a person makes a great effort to invent or discover something it would be completely wrong if someone else would take the same idea and pretend to be the owner! If a person is a very good musician or a nice scientist because he has the right abilities to carry on that kind of job we should recognize unanimously that specific person has something more than anyone else and should be appreciated for his skill.
This first introduction leads us to the concet of plagiarism. It is an act of fraud and involves both stealing someone else's work and then lying about it. Is a form of plagiarism to use another's production without asking permission or without crediting the source or to present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source.
I think that avoiding plagiarism is one of the most difficult things in our life. Every time that we hear someone speaking or we read something we try to keep in mind the exact words we heard or read and if we repeat them in a public discourse without adding the author we would fall into plagiarism. Even now I am realizing that I read information about plagiarism on blogs posted on delicious, on wikipedia, on the blogs of Mario and other peers of mine and I have already used words they had used before! However I am not completely sure whether this is plagiarism or not because I didn't copied their words but I rielaborated the same ideas (...and it could be possible that I used the same words too...)
On plagiarism.org I found interesting information: "according to U.S. law the expression of original ideas is considered intellectual property, and is protected by copyright laws, just like original inventions. Almost all forms of expression fall under copyright protection as long as they are recorded in some way (such as book or a computer file). All of the following are considered plagiarism:
- turning in someone else's work as your own
- copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit
- failing to put a quotation in quotation marks
- giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation
- chiangin words but copying the sentence stucture of a source without giving credit
[...] "
Wow..it is pretty scaring...we are barely allowed to remember what we read!!! We should always quote what we write!
But where is the limit between the legal and the illegal? If I copy five words out of a sentence made of fiveteen words could it be considered plagiarism? And even if I quote all the sentences that I took from someone else's text should I ask permission before doing my work?

The unique and genuine way to avoid plagiarism is to make quotations and provide information about the author which is also a good way to inform the audience on where you took the information from.
Personally I tend to use a lot the information that I find around myself! I do not simply copy what I see or hear or read and I always try to rielaborate the concepts! If I have to write something such as this post I begin searching on the web for some information, I read them, and when I have a clear idea about the topic I start to write my post. If I do not remember the exact words that I need to express something I return on the web site and copy the exact words...and often I forget to quote them...I'm sorry....but if I really copy just two or three words could it be considered plagiarism??
I will enquire about it!
Now I feel I learnt a lot about IPR and plagiarism but I still have to focus on the Italian laws about it because the respect is one of the most important things in the World and we always have to respect everybody, even when they create something! I cannot simply take examples from other people's works without giving importance to it...The best way for respecting the others is to know how to do it!

I rielaborated some material from: http://www.plagiarism.org/learning_center/what_is_citation.html and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intellectual_property

fedybhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04990593724456650146noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9039247546460214255.post-26811877720940767742009-04-15T18:26:00.007+02:002009-04-22T15:36:33.089+02:00
Hello everybody!
I'm very happy to tell you that I finally solved the problem in my blog!
I don't know what happened...one day I was modifying one of my posts (using Ubuntu) and when I saved it everything changed!!! They discussed the importance of criteria that we use while searching information on the web. In general the most important things that we should examine are: the author, the website and the contents.
As a first thing we should discover who is the author, whether he is known in the community or not, if he can be considered as an authoritative person, other information.

The author is the fundamental part of the information which is given: if he is an engineer or a lawyer, for example, he may use specific terms and we would be prepared with a good dictionary!

Speaking about the website we should always look at the domain and the date of publication. We often think that all the things published on the Internet are fresh and new, but they're not! We must be careful! The web could also contain old websites, with old information (obviously I am referring to political or economic information). Another important thing that has to be considered is the fact that in the Internet there is a kind of copyright. There are no specific rules about it but it is to say that some images and documents cannot be copied but just seen or analysed.

As far as the content is concerned we should ask ourselves: is the content reliable? Are there any external references or useful links?

What is the layout like? It is important to see if in the website there are pictures or emoticons or videos because we may discover more things about the author (for example his/her age).

From my personal point of view when I search for information of the Internet I focus first on the information...and after a long while...I also try to understand who is the author, when he wrote that piece of information and so on... I'm not a good web explorer!!!

I know it's not a good thing to say but I would like to make a brief consideration, even if it would seem "silly"...
I never tried to ask myself "mmmh, let's see why the author wrote this text, when and where did he published it, is there any copyright..." Basically I think that the Internet is the fastest way in order to find information and it is also the easiest! If I am searching for information on the web I search the information and anything else....!
What I always forget is the fact that there is no difference between an on-line research and a research made inside a library, the only thing that changes is the 'channel' we use. In an on-line research I find the text, copy it somewhere and then copy the URL of the web site.
In a research made in a library I am forced to pay attention to every single information. If I imagine to be in a library and make a research the first thing I do is to search few books which satisfy my criteria. Once I have found a nice number of books I start to read their index and catalogue the information that could be useful for my work. For every book I write in a sheet of paper: the title, the author, the date of publication, the pages that interest me and even other additional information. I would make this work for every book I use! Paradoxally it seems to me an obvious procedure for a textual research but a useless procedure for an on-line research!
I always should keep in mind that an on-line research is perfectly like a textual research and all the information within the text are important just like the text itself!

Our teacher gave us interesting comments made by university students about the search for information on web-sites:
- Tips from the University of Essex
- Tips from Purdue's Online Writing Lab (OWL)
- Tips from San Diego State University

I absolutely agree with these comments. The web contains thousands of information and we sould be very careful in finding what really interests us.
